Synopsis
The case problem tackles the issue of sexual harassment occurring in professional sports. In June 2019, two professional dancers, namely, Amber Lovell and Tammy Johnson, filed a case against the Lakers Head Coach, Marvin Pinder, who allegedly harassed them sexually in 2018, during a four-team away game in Texas and Florida. It took place in The Sky Bar, the Galleria, Heritage Mansion, and Rustic Waterfalls, where the head coach appeared intoxicated and had inappropriate actions against one dancer, to whom another athlete stepped in to help her. The dilemma lies with the LA Lakers Organization on the decision on whether to settle the case, terminate the coach, or put him on probation. The general manager in the case asked for the opinion of another expert, who is me, to help him in deciding the appropriate sanctions, which can reduce the financial losses of the organization, satisfy the wants of the victims, and meet the expectations of the public.
Educational Objectives
This is a difficult case that requires not only managerial analysis but also collaboration with the company’s legal counsel, to ensure that appropriate judgment will be made. At the end of the exercise, the students should have a better comprehension of the following issues:
* The significance of ethics and professionalism between members of the organization (WHO, 2017);
* The importance of systematic review of evidence during crises that may involve litigation (Islam et al., 2020); and
* Critical decision-making on the adequate sanctions secondary to inappropriate behaviors inflicted between organizational members (International Labor Organization, 2015).
