Organizational learning plays an important role in organizational productivity and overall success. This paper will discuss organizational learning from Peter Senge’s perspective. Specifically, it will discuss Senge’s five disciplines, characteristics of an organizational climate that support organizational learning, and how the two relate to organizational learning.
Senge identified five disciplines of a learning organization. They are; a shared vision, personal mastery, team learning, mental models, and system thinking (Kopp, 2014). A shared vision refers to developing and building a common understanding and commitment within an organization by establishing targets and goals as well as the strategies to be applied to achieve the goal. Hoe (2019) posits that a shared vision helps organizations align the different interests and goals of individuals with the organization’s goal to attain the organization’s overall goal. Personal mastery refers to the ability to know what one wants and improve their competencies in an effort to achieve what one wants. According to Reese (2020), personal mastery is the most important of the five disciplines because it not only creates improvements but also enables individuals to develop an inner awareness of their contributions. Team learning refers to developing the ability to think together as a team. This occurs when individuals within a group share knowledge and experiences (Hoe, 2019). As a result, they identify better ways of doing things. Mental models are the values, beliefs, and assumptions that members of the organization hold (Hoe, 2019). They influence how people think and behave and as such, the mental models should be aligned with organizational learning. System thinking refers to identifying and understanding the interrelationships among different parts of the organization. According to Kopp (20140), organizations should be seen as one whole organism with different parts that are interconnected and the parts should not be managed separately.
