Oshkosh Corporation is an American company founded in 1917 and deals with designing and building trucks, specialty trucks, military vehicles, and access equipment. The company develops various trademarks, including Frontline, Command Zone, London, and McNeilus. The primary business is manufacturing and delivering machines. Therefore, the firm has attained a strong market position. Ji et al. (2021) note that the firm has high-quality products, strong customer service, and innovation, highlighting its industry role. With more than 15,000 employees, the annual profit is estimated at $8.1 billion.
Sustainability
The firm engages in diverse environmental sustainability projects that assist communities. Each year, the company prepares a sustainability report that highlights the efforts in environmental sustainability. Various activities improve the environment. Over the years, the firm has expanded its recycling capacity. Two Oshkosh Defense manufacturing facilities received silver level True Zero waste certification. The “Bags to Benches” program converts polyethylene plastic foam and plastic shrink wrap into benches used in the manufacturing facilities by employees.
In 2013, the company launched the “Renting to Reduce Waste” program. Through the program, the company has used 800,000 returnable containers annually, reducing 761,000 pounds of cardboard waste, 408,000 pounds of shrink wrap, and 12,000,000 pounds of wood (Oshkosh Corporation, 2022). The program benefits suppliers that include Oshkosh Defense, JLG, McNeilus, and Pierce. This has an overall impact on lowering emissions because the number of trucks needed in these shipments is minimized.
The company uses various metrics to track its sustainability initiatives. Oshkosh Corporation has various targets in its quest for environmental sustainability. Since beginning its environmental programs, it has reduced 82.5% of waste by converting it to energy, direct use, and composting. Besides, a 13.5% reduction in energy intensity has been recorded since 2014. The company received the 2016 energy efficiency excellence award winner for its conserving energy (Business Wire, 2016). The current targets are to reduce emissions and energy intensity by 25% before 2030.
Community Engagement
The second pillar of sustainability focuses on community engagement. Oshkosh Corporation recognizes people’s role in company success.
