Strawberry Fields: Providing Services to Children Having Developmental Challenges

Essay Instructions:

Many organizations in your local community are geared toward supporting adults in their developmental journey. While many of us immediately think of places such as retirement communities and nursing homes, there are a number of organizations that serve the needs of everyday working adults as well as special populations of adults.
This writing assignment is designed to have students investigate one such organization around the Penn State community, in the surrounding Centre Region, or even in the student's home town. The organization should have focus and a purpose of meeting the developmental needs of some group of adults in the community. While students will have a great deal of flexibility in the organizations they choose, the professor may ask for additional details to ensure that a suitable organization has been chosen. Below are links to a few examples of local services that would meet the requirements for this assignment are:
Strawberry Fields (Links to an external site.)
Penn State Career Services (Links to an external site.)
Foxdale Village (Links to an external site.)
ACRES Project (Links to an external site.)
Centre Region Parks and Rec Active Adult Center
Students are encouraged to explore other possibilities and reach out to the instructor and other students with ideas for an organization to profile. Additionally, students may complete both their Organization Profile and their volunteer site work at the same organization. This is encouraged as you will likely have a deeper and more rewarding experience by focusing on one organization!
Once you have identified the organization they would like to profile, collect available information about the organization from their website, brochures, or manuals available to the public. Identify the mission statement or statement of purpose for this organization.
Your writing assignment should address the following questions:
What is the problem or community need that this organization addresses? What information do they use to communicate that need? (i.e. do they use statistics or examples? how do they define the problem they're addressing?)
What services does the organization provide (that is, how do they address the problem or need)?
Who is their target population (who do they serve) and how do they determine eligibility for services?
What are their sources of funding? What types of donations come from the community?
Describe the organizational structure:
Who is in charge (director, executive) and do they have paid staff?
Do they use volunteers and what is required to become a volunteer?
This should be written in complete sentences and paragraphs. Try to be as thorough as possible and use the resources available from the organization and its staff to help you get a complete understanding of how this organization serves .the community. This writing assignment is worth a total of 30 points - 5 points for each of the major bullets listed (25 points) and 5 points for writing quality and formatting. See the attached rubric, which will be used for grading these assignments.

Strawberry Fields: Organization Profile 1. Definition of Problem or Need
Strawberry Fields, founded 1972 in Yarnell, PA, closes a longstanding gap in caring for individuals, particularly children, with early development challenges, intellectual disabilities, mental health issues (“History,” n.d.). Instead of segregating and isolating individuals care services are provided for, Strawberry Fields ensures integrated, meaningful experiences to enable individuals in need make a difference and contribute to local community. The problems, or challenges, Strawberry Fields addresses prior to providing services are identified in ways suited to each population Strawberry Fields serves. For children having early development challenges, an early intervention is mandated by state and is performed at no cost to families (“Kids First Early Intervention Program,” n.d.). For individuals with mental health issues, no specific problem identification methods are described although a wide range of services and referral programs are provided (“Mental Health Services,” n.d.). For individuals with intellectual disabilities, no specific problem identification methods are described, either, although a wide range of services and referral program are provided (“Programs for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities,” n.d.). The lack of problem identification methods for individuals with intellectual disabilities and individuals with intellectual disabilities is, perhaps, a reporting gap Strawberry Fields needs to close at least to make service provision more open and accountable.
2. Service Provided
The main community challenges, or problems, Strawberry Fields addresses find parallel services suited for each identified problem. The Kids First Early Intervention Program is aimed, for example, to address early development delays for 0-3 year old children. These services

include, primarily, “autism, infant massage, torticollis treatment, feeding difficulties, behavior problems, communication devices, special equipment, and assistive technology expertise” (“Kids First Early Intervention Program”). The mental health services Strawberry Fields provide for individuals with mental issues include, moreover, blended case management (i.e. mental health support for children, adolescents and adults at home, school or community including assessment of strengths and needs, advocacy and benefits coordination) as well as a range of residence programs or arrangements including Community Residential Rehabilitation Services (CRR)
Certified Peer Support Services and Fairweather Lodge Program (“Mental Health Services”). Similarly, services provided for individuals with intellectual disabilities include a combination of intervention (e.g. adaptive skills, money management, use of community resources, and self-care) and residence (e.g. community homes and unlicensed residential) services (“Programs for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities”).
