Consumer tastes and preferences are metric tools used to measure customer satisfaction depending on the items purchased within a particular period. Both Pepsi and Coca-Cola have embarked on producing goods that have dietary benefits. Most consumers are seeking products that are healthy; thus, Coca-Cola company introduced Diet coke. Beverage companies have been in tough and competitive markets for the last decade, which has pushed them to come up with products that satisfy the needs of customers (Olivia, 2019).
Consumer tastes and preferences, and competition are affecting the sale of carbonated products in different ways. Since 2012, the company has introduced two carbonated drinks: heathiest, Diet Coke, and Coke plus. Most health care professionals do not regard carbonated products as a way of keeping fit. Diet Coke is termed sugar-free and healthier; however, sugar level is not the only factor to consider in health management. Carbonated drinks face threats in consumption and marketing due to several factors (Pragya, n.d).
Firstly, consumers are now focused on finding products that help them control weight gain and keep healthy. These products have high levels of color mixed with carbon water and thus do not guarantee good health. Moreover, the competition is quite stiff, and most companies are striving to produce goods that meet consumers' health needs. For example, Oatley and Lonza are some of the companies which produce healthy beverages. These companies have increased by more than 30 percent over the last 20 years, reflecting the level of competition (Visarut, 2013).
This is a great challenge to the marketing of Diet Coke product which has zero levels of sugar. There are several factors to consider to override the competition and meet the needs of consumers. Firstly, it is by responding to the current market changes and consumer tastes. Some consumer taste changes include water usage and management of plastic products (Broniarczyk & Griffin, 2014). In this case, it is very important to re-do the model on plastic management to ensure it is compliant with the needs of customers (Iacobucci, 2014).
