The secular approach to leadership differs from the servant leadership in many aspects. The secular view of leadership places emphasis on the individual and insists on doing everything within ones power to get ahead in life (Lund, & Henderson, 2004). This kind of leadership is founded on the belief that one can get anything that they want as long as they work hard. While it is true that hard work will get to the top, it requires character for one to stay there. A good leader is the one who has a fully developed character which is the only thing that can lead not only the individual but the entire team to the top (Covey, 2002). The world today is filled with examples of leaders who tried to get to the top by using secular leadership. One of the best examples that I know of leaders who have tried to get to the top devoid of character was Kenneth Lay the former CEO and chairman of Enron. For close to two decades, Lay managed to fool people that he was a focused leader who had turned around Enron’s fortune. However, the truth came out in the open in 2001 when it was realized that lay had engaged in corporate and accounting malpractices that saw Enron losing billions of dollars while Lay and his associates cleverly cooked the books to give the impression of a successful organization. This led him to not only lose his job and reputation but also committed to jail for fraud.
Over the years I have played various leadership roles in different organizations. As an individual, being a leader meant doing everything within my power to get ahead. This meant that I had to craftily do away with any person who stood in the way of my career growth.
