What is your given "authority" at your work place and/or professional life? Describe a time when you have exercised this authority in your journey as a professional nurse?
Nurses are expected to provide holistic care, and the nurse leaders should ensure operations run smoothly in the workplace. I have been placed under staff authority to supervise newly recruited nurse in the workplace, to advice them to improve the quality of care. However, I was also expected to work closely with them and creating professional relationships has been crucial to leading and managing the workplace. Being in authority in the workplace is associated with having power to influence fellow worker, who respect and trust the position of authority figures to make decision that affect various levels of the workplace. Authority is limited as one cannot have complete control over others, and leaders then need to be accountable to their followers (GCU, n.d).
How does your response compare to the secular view of power?
The secular view of power highlights that the leaders have the power to make decisions unilaterally, but I believe that leaders should inspire confidence confidence and motivate employees. The secular view of power then focuses on the employees gaining experience while downplaying the role of communication and trust in fostering a good working environment. I focus more on fostering trust, but the secular does not necessarily encourage collaboration between the nurse leaders and the employees, and the line of commands is associated with clear boundaries how the nurse manager interact with other nursing staff.
How does your response compare to the secular view of authority?
Leaders who rely on the secular view of authority my exert power and control over their follows as this may enforce obedience. This contrasts with my response to ensure there is collaboration with followers where possible. The authority to lead, places one in a position where they communicate with other people, but people may not be receptive of the message if they do not trust the authority figure.
