Like the invention of the wheel, technology has come with a very subtle influence on the world economies. World economies now rely heavily on technology on the various production fronts, from agriculture, finances, transport and manufacturing among others. The debate in the recent years has been relative to the difference between the virtual organizations and the conventional organization in terms of operations (Jawabreh, Allahham, Alrjoub & Ahmad, 2012). Technology has revolutionized the way that businesses operate in the last few decades. It is no longer conventional to start a business that is based on brick models. Companies are now operating on the internet and meeting their objectives without compromise. Airlines are some of the best examples of the conventional businesses that have been around for quite some time and have some of the best applications in terms of technology (U.S. airlines lead world in technology adoption, but gap closing; SITA's annual airline IT trends survey finds U.S. airline technology expenditure stalled; streamlining has replaced innovation, 2005).
Relative to the technology trends and the diverse customer needs and airlines increasingly complicated objectives, airlines have highly adopted technology in almost all of their operations. One of the areas that airlines have heavily invested in technology is in the cargo hauling sections (Jawabreh, Allahham, Alrjoub & Ahmad, 2012). Other than flying passengers in and around the world, cargo shipment is one of the most lucrative ventures. Tracking and tracing are important extension of the cargo shipment sections. In the past, tracking and tracing cargo, meant that one had to keep calling to make sure that their cargo has arrived. With the joined collaboration between airlines and parcel delivery companies, customers are now able to track and trace their cargo from the comfort of the homes or wherever they are using the internet.
