Target is a fast growing company, which specializes in fashion, home goods designing and food distribution (Segran, 2016). Food being a basic commodity, the company has put in more research in the area so as to increase profitability. In the past few years, the company has been changing its mode of operation by putting in more research on food production than on fashion and design. The company’s aim to penetrate into the market has motivated it to increase their research on consumer food needs so that they can deliver them, thus increase their sales.
Training and development is one of the key areas that Target Human Resource Management team is working on so as to be able to meet its objectives. The management function is concerned with enhancing the performance of individuals within the organization in order to improve their skills and working characteristics. One observation which the company has made in the recent years is about the quality of apples which people buy. Segran (2016) notes that most consumers buy fruits in supermarkets which are as old as fourteen months, but have not idea about this. Due to this, the company has set up a lab, named coLab, which brings together more than 40 participants in the food sector, so that they can work together to come up with a method on how they can address consumer food needs.
Through training and development, the company has managed to come up with a food spectrometer machine, which is able to analyze fruits and other food substances, and gives a report of consumers about the food nutrients contained, calories and how old the apple is. The machine would be effective in making labels unnecessary, as consumers could be able to get all the information they need through the machine (Williams, 2015). Gathering much information is the major challenge for the company. In order to address the issue, the company has distributed the spectrometers in its branches so as to collect as much information as possible needed by consumers. The HRM function, is not only beneficial to Target company, but to all consumers as they will have knowledge on their hands, thus, be in a position to make better decisions when deciding on what food to purchase.
The food computer, a technology which allows people to grow any kind of food commodity is another research area the HRM team is undertaking in order to enhance the company’s activities.
