Introduction
Food labeling is an important aspect of all edible commodities. Its importance is not only due to the marketing aspect that labeling provides all products but also due to the health and policy aspects instituted at the national and international levels for food products. Food labels have three main goals: to provide basic information on the product including ingredients and ingredient quantities, promotional information for marketing purposes, and health plus nutritional information. This analysis will use Cadbury’s chocolate bars UK as its example product, looking at its product history, labeling, and how labeling can assist in healthy dieting.
Cadbury’s Chocolate Bars
Cadbury’s is one of the UK’s leading brands in the chocolate bar industry with its roots in Birmingham City in the United Kingdom. In the past, the company would source various raw materials from across the world, which would be imported into Britain where the final chocolate bar would be produced for local consumption or exportation (Cidell & Alberts, 2006). Although Cadburys in the UK still sources raw materials for the production of locally consumed chocolate bars outside the country due to the unique requirements for growing cocoa (Cidell & Alberts, 2006), which is the main ingredient in the production of chocolate, most of the production is also outsourced so that most chocolate bars outside the UK are produced and consumed within their localities. However, the consumption of chocolate is still highest in the developed countries of the north due to its status as a luxury food (Cidell & Alberts, 2006).
Labelling, Marketing, and The Success of Cadbury’s Chocolate
The Foods Standards Agency provides the labeling requirements for packaged foods in the UK. Some of these laws are food specific for products such as chocolate and cocoa products. Nonetheless, there are general food labeling laws that stipulate the necessary labeling for all food packaging. These include the name of the food, which must not be misleading, a list of ingredients used in the product, allergens must be emphasized using methods such as bolding, and the quantitative declaration of ingredients that showcases the percentages of each ingredient in the product (/business-guidance/packaging-and-labelling). Regulations on coca and cholate products detail how to label these products, but are more specific, such for example as in denoting the type of fat used in the chocolate if other fats besides cocoa butter. Cadbury’s chocolate, being a confectionary, has a fairly high sugar content. The chocolate bar used in this analysis has a 15.8% sugar content.
