The headquarters is based in Arkansas, where Sam Walton founded it in 1962. The company currently operates over 10,585 stores, under different brands, across 27 countries (Volpe & Boland, 2022). Walmart is the largest private employer providing more than 2 million people job opportunities worldwide. Despite the retail industry being overly competitive and many companies in the field reorganizing, closing, or cutting back, Walmart continues to grow, generating an annual revenue of over $570 billion. However, over the years, Walmart has received backlash from groups and individuals over its business practices, models, and policies when achieving its business targets. According to Hollbrook (2011), criticism has been directed explicitly towards charges of gender discrimination, racism, employee surveillance, sourcing of foreign products, and environmental practices.
Mission, Vision, and Values of Walmart Inc.
The company's mission is to better people's lives by helping them save their money, irrespective of where they live. To accomplish its mission, Walmart adjusts its prices to lower affordable prices so people can save money when shopping with them. Additionally, they have expanded their reach by having stores across the US and worldwide so that people can access their stores anytime, anywhere. Its mission is tied to its vision to make the daily lives of busy families easier. Their target of busy families informs a considerable part of their business strategy: to capture a vast population segment and end up serving the rest of the population. Moreover, Walmart's culture is guided by values of integrity, excellence, individual respect, and customer service.
Walmart's Actions
The American global corporate store has been condemned over the years by various groups and people, such as the worker’s guilds and community advocates, for its practices and strategic but sometimes discriminatory policies. Walmart has been accused of bad trading practices such as having very low cost products that draw clients from more modest businesses, harming neighbourhood community networks (Groysberg et al., 2018). Additionally, the organization is criticized of harming the United States economy by depending unreasonably on cheap Chinese products while it is the largest merchant in the United States (Groysberg et al., 2018). Walmarts business extend into numerous classes, like quick purchaser merchandise and hardware products.
Gender discrimination at Walmart has been a persistent vice, with over 1,000 filed charges over time. According to Saniato (2019), male employees are treated better than female employees.
