Groups are a common way for people to handle complex tasks in the school or work environment. Working in groups, however, requires that individuals have strong communication skills. Without the right communication skills, misunderstandings may arise within the group causing unnecessary conflicts and inefficiency. It is, therefore, essential to learn how to communicate effectively in groups. In this paper, the author uses the example of the groups in the work environment to show why effective communication is essential in groups.
In an organizational setting, there are different types of groups. Usually, groups are made up of between five and ten people. However, the size varies with the organization. The most critical factor to a working group is that its members are willing to collaborate to accomplish a particular goal. Before group members set out to achieve their objective, they should first establish the right communication channel. Group communication channels within the workplace may include conference calls, formal team meetings, group emails, or paper-based memos. If a group member wishes to send an important message regarding a hard deadline, he may use a group message chat. However, if the group discusses several things in the chat, this vital information may be lost. Such a decision may slow down communication efficiency. Hence, group members need to identify the proper channels to use.
