DISH Network Corporation is a firm based in Englewood, Colorado and is involved in providing broadcast satellite services. It provides an extensive array of DISH branded pay-television services. It has an estimated 14 million subscribers in America (Reuters, 2016). This paper provides a discussion of the strategic direction of DISH Network Corporation. The paper also discusses whether this firm is actually on the right track or not and recommendations are made which would help this company gain market share – that is; the useful strategies which DISH Network Corporation can consider are formulated. Lastly, a comment is provided regarding whether this firm is operating in a manner that is socially responsible and whether its corporate social responsibility record actually hinders its success or helps it.
Strategic direction of DISH Network Corporation
In an effort to succeed in the marketplace and compete effectively in its present competitive environment, some of the major strategies which have recently been implemented by DISH Network Corporation include the following: (i) introduction of Sling TV, which is essentially a live, linear streaming over-the-top service. This service, which is basically another version of the Pay-TV and aimed at millennials, was introduced in the year 2015 and it offers an extensive range of channels for a twenty dollar monthly subscription (Vault, 2016). Sling TV is delivered over the internet to mobile devices, computer, as well as services like Xbox One, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku, and provides live streaming of sought after cable channels including ESPN and HBO (Vault, 2016).
(ii) DISH enables its customers to utilize dishanywhere.com website as well as its mobile applications for tablets and smart phones to see authorized content, search program listings, and be able to control remotely some features of their digital video recorders. (iii) The company offers Latino and international programming packages. This allows its subscribers to select from more than two-hundred-and-fifty channels in twenty-eight languages (Reuters, 2016). Considering this strategic direction that DISH Network Corporation has taken, this firm is really on the right track. This strategic direction will greatly help DISH not just to retain its existing customers, but will also allow the company to attract more customers which will allow the company to increase its sales and revenues.
Recommendation on strategies to help DISH gain market share
Some of the useful strategies which can be considered by DISH Network Corporation that would certainly help the firm to gain market share include mergers and acquisition; provision of more services; and international expansion. One company in particular that DISH can merge with is T-Mobile, which is currently one of DISH’s main competitors. It is recommended that DISH merges with T-Mobile and integrate its business with T-Mobile and share control of the combined companies with the owners of T-Mobile. DISH can also acquire other companies in the United States media and communications industries such as AT&T.
