Differences between data warehouses and data marts
Data warehouses are used for holding multiple subject areas while data marts are used for holding single subject area, for instance, it could be either accounting or marketing only. Data warehouses also hold information in details while data marts hold information in summary form. Data warehouses works towards the integration of all data sources while data marts focus on the integration of information from the specific subject area (Swanhart, 2010). Finally, data warehouses feed dimensional models without necessarily using the dimensional models. On the other hand, the development of data marts depends on the dimensional model by use of a star schema.
