Determining Biological Sex in Humans
Sex in humans is determined in the early developmental stages. In humans, the Y chromosome dictates the sex of the embryo. Sex determination typically happens during fertilization. Three years after the Y was founded in 1956, it was recognized as the principal regulator of human gender. All chromosomes in the human body are paired according to their size, amount of genes, and type (Leroi, 2005). The sex chromosomes also have pairs, but the combination is more complicated in males and females; an X is coupled with a Y in males. Therefore, normal males and females have XX and XY chromosomal complements, respectively. Biologically, the X and the Y are mismatched; the first is large, and the second is small.
The Y directs, and the X submits in sex determination. The fact that the Y chromosome acts more strongly than the X chromosome proves that it determines sex. Men who are XXY, XXXY, or even XXXXY—that is, guys who have a Y but also abnormally have more than one X—provided that proof. It took 34 years to find the origins of the Y's ability to control gender. It took the assistance of a small, peculiar group of individuals who appeared to resist the sex chromosomes' dictatorial directives to reduce this enormous DNA length to manageable dimensions (Leroi, 2005).
