Art has constantly evolved from ancient times through to modern times. While its evolution is marked by highs and lows, art has managed to always withstand its challenges and eventually rise. Artists must often reflect on the stages that art has gone through to understand its progress and relevance. Giorgio Vasari outlines the chronological history of art, while Leon Battista gives guidelines on the necessary approach to Renaissance art. The two authors provide essential insights into the evolution of art in history.
In his ideology, Vasari argues that art originated from nature. The divine light was the master of the first image, thereby allowing humans to elevate to a god-like position through art (Davis, 2013). The known history of art begins with antiquity. Vasari defines antiquity as the period before Constantine. In Rome, antiquity took place during the late epoch. Some of the remarkable Roman artwork during this period include statues of Cere. While the initial stages of antiquity were close the perfection, this perfection was deteriorating over time. Other cities that had a significant impact on antiquity art include Athens, Nero, Vespasian, Trajan, Hadrian, and other far-framed cities (Davis, 2013). The rise of Constantine introduced a new milestone in art. This period followed after a decline in the perfection of Roman style, resulting in the introduction of new approaches during Constantine’s reign. The Caesars left in charge by Constantine continued to build in Rome, although the perfection and elegance were in decline. During this period, the Barbarous nations rose to destroy Rome and rebel against its ideologies. Barbarian dominance led to an extensive destrctution of Roman art. The rise of Christianity was another significant period in history art. Christianity destroyed pagan art and hammered down the excellent ancients represented by statues and monuments. Eventually, a new generation of architects and artists arose, leading to the introduction of the Gothic period. The gothic period was largely influenced by deities and religion. The gothic was followed by a new form of art, that was largely informed by a purer style of antique. Having witnessed the ruins of Rome and remnants of antiques, the succeeding generation slowly began venturing into renaissance art.
