3. Instrumentation and voices: Identify as many instruments as possible. If you are unsure of what an instrument is, describe what the instrument looks and sounds like. Describe how many voices are used. Is there a lead vocalist? A group of voices? 4. Melody: Who has the main melody? Remember that this could be one musician (vocal or instrumental) or several. Does the melody go back and forth between instruments or voices?

5. Harmony: Overall, does the music sound pleasing to your ears? Are there any moments of discord? Does everything seem to “fit well together”?

6. Rhythm: Can you find a beat to the music? (Can you steadily clap to it?) Is the tempo fast, moderate or slow? Does the beat change or does it stay the same?

7. Texture: Is it monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic or heterophonic? Is it a mix of several textures? Remember, most pop songs featuring voice + instruments will be homophonic (one main melody + harmonic support).

8. Form: How is the music organized? For example, is there a chorus (a repeated section) that uses the same lyrics/melody? Can you describe the music as if there are several sections to it? Remember that you will probably need to listen to the music several times to figure out if there are any patterns or what the underlying structure is to the piece.

9. Function: Why do you think the music was written? Is there a specific message or meaning to the music? If there are words, what language is used? If the lyrics are in a foreign language, look up translations whenever possible. Even if there are no words or lyrics, what might the music be used for or mean? 10. Reaction: How did the music make you feel? Did you like it/dislike it/feel neutral? Is there anything to which you could immediately relate?
