In the Album of Muraqqa‘at- MSS 609 Iran, under the Khalil collections the album focuses on the work of Persian calligraphers such as Mir ‘Ali al-Harawi and Mir ‘Imad al-Hasani. The works from Iran cover 16th to the 18th century Mir ‘Ali al-Harawi mostly wrote in the nasta‘liq script and inspired other calligraphers. The nasta‘liq combines the Naskh and Taliq that became associated with the Persian calligraphy style and this form of Islamic calligraphy was celebrated as it became popular in illustrated manuscripts. Poetry, prose texts and the 16th century Persian calligraphic work emphasizes elaborate borders especially in the nasta‘liq scripts.
This is mainly a meaningful compilation of Persian art works, but there are also two European engravings among the portfolios the European paintings different from the calligraphy work as the focus on visual representation revered among European communities and Islamic communities differed, where calligraphy was more valuable than paintings among the Muslims. The practice of Islamic calligraphy was important to send images, and when making the album there was focus on the folio dimensions, the panels and the calligraphy or image or painting.
