Keith Sweat is an American rhythm-and-blues singer, songwriter, and pioneer in the New Jack Swing movement and culture. New Jack Swing, a popular type of rhythm-and-blues music in the late 80s, merged several production elements, including hip-hop, programmed drums, tempo and rhythm, and sampling. The hybrid music movement emerged in the mid-80s, led by the writing and production of Teddy Riley, Jimmy Jam, LA Reid, Bobby Brown, Terry Lewis, and Babyface, among other artists. One album that embodies the pop-oriented rhythm-and-blues style of New Jack Swing is Keith Sweat’s 1996 self-titled album Keith Sweat. Rhythm-and-blues fans widely praised Keith Sweat: the album contained two songs (“Twisted” and “Nobody”) that went ahead to become the biggest songs of the 90s.
Keith Sweat is widely recognized as one of the founding members of the New Jack Swing musical movement. The main hits were “Make You Sweat,” “I want Her,” “I’ll Give All My Love To You,” and “Keep It Comin” incorporating the insistent beats, clearly enunciated vocals, and light melody lines that characterize swingbeat. Sweat was born in Harlem to working-class parents. In the mid to late 80s, New Jack Swing artists were the soundtrack for young black Americans who wanted to dissociate from the sex-and-drugs-and-guns messages of most rap songs (Williams, 2020).
