Music Consumer Self-Analysis

For this week's WA assignment, you must choose ONE of the options below (do not do both). Whichever you choose, the total length of your answer should be roughly in the range of 400-700 words.
Option 1: Music consumer self-analysis
Please take time to thoughtfully reflect on the following questions, and then answer each group in roughly a paragraph:
1st paragraph: Explain both the apps and the methods that you use to listen to and find music. Rather than just list the apps you use, explain how you use them to find music. For example, do you get suggestions from software, based on your previous choices? Search tracks based on input from friends? Search by genre, or follow curated playlists? Follow what appears on your social media feed? Follow music discovered in other media like films or games?
2nd paragraph: How do you think that these ways of encountering music that you just described affect the kinds of music that you are exposed to? For example, are there types of music you're already aware you would enjoy, but don't usually encounter because they don't appear through your normal ways of finding music? What kinds of music are you most likely to listen to and discover, given the methods and factors you have described?
3rd paragraph: This week's readings and film on the music industry described a range of different fears that people have about changes in the popular music business. As summarized at the end of the instructor's lecture, explain whether you share any of those worries or not, and why. Do you feel like there is anything you would like to change about your own habits? If not, why? If so, what changes would you want to make and why?
Option 2: Music and intellectual property laws
Please write a response that reflects careful thought and attention to the questions below as well as to the related readings/videos. Avoid directly quoting from instructor lecture slideshows, and make sure that most of your response is in your own words.
What does Joanna Demers mean (p. 7) by "the conflation of transformative appropriation... with plagiarism... and music piracy," and why is she concerned with the way this conflation often takes place in the application of copyright law? How does her argument on this topic relate to Lawrence Lessig's main arguments in his lecture "Laws that choke creativity"?
The Demers book and the Lessig presentation are both from around 15 years ago. Do you think that the problems they discuss and the framework of analysis they provide for dealing with those problems are still relevant today? Why or why not? In responding, you may wish to draw on examples from your own experience as a consumer of popular music and media.
