Gender Inequality in Music

Essay Instructions:

**There are 2 parts of this assignment. Both of them doesn't need to be long, as long as the instructions are followed.**
1. Confronting Gender Inequity in Music:
The gender disparities we examined this week in the art world are consistent with similar phenomena in the music industry.
The Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California publishes an annual report called "Inclusion in the Recording Studio?" Please read a summary of the report published in 2021 here: Annenberg Inclusion Initiative's annual report on popular music reveals little progress for women (https://annenberg(dot)usc(dot)edu/news/research-and-impact/annenberg-inclusion-initiatives-annual-report-popular-music-reveals-little)
The USC project, with funding from Spotify, is only one of many initiatives seeking to not only shine light on inequity, but also to encourage change. Another example is a 2021 study called "Be the Change - Women Making Music" that highlighted many of the challenges facing women in the music industry. You can read the study here: Be the Change: Women Making Music (https://www(dot)tunecore(dot)com/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2021/03/be-the-change-women-making-music.pdf)
If you plan on entering the music industry, what is one thing that you can do, or one thing you would like to see happen, to create a more inclusive space in the specific area? Do you know of any organizations in your area dedicated to these issues? If so, share them with your classmates.
Your post should be two paragraphs long.
2. When historians narrate the past, there are always choices involved. Who makes it into the story and who gets left out tells us a great deal about the people writing those histories and about the tastes and standards of the historian's time.
As suggested in this week's discussion, if you were hired to write the history of music from the year 2000 to the present, how would you go about doing this? What tools would you use to select who would make it into your history so that someone reading your work 100 years from now would know what is going on now?
Your responses should be two paragraphs long.

Gender Inequality in Music
Q1 Representation is among the barriers to gender inclusivity in the music industry. Without representation, upcoming girls and women interested in music have little or no incentive to pursue opportunities in the male-dominated industry. According to Smith et al. (2021), women form a paltry 2.6% of producers, 12.6% of songwriters, and 21.6% of artists. It is even worse for women of color, where there are only nine out of 1,291 producers. Given that more than half of the global population is women, it means that something is stopping girls and young women from pursuing opportunities in the industry. According to Aswad (2021), music composition, production, and sound have long been secluded for men, which explains why 63% of female creators feel excluded. As a result, the representation of women remains suppressed, with opportunities skewed towards men. A solution to this would be to provide girls, particularly in minority communities, with opportunities to pursue music careers and education and the availability of role models for aspiring youth enthusiasts. This approach could level the playing field for boys and girls within these communities. Organizations like Sh...
