Reading about Europe after the “Medieval European Theater”, I was taken by the role that the church played in early drama. During the era, there was no organized theater because of strong opposition from the church (p 26). Bouhaïk-Gironès et al. (2011) point out the common belief that the hostility of the church could have destroyed theater. Interestingly, it was the church that started performing bible stories. They saw these kinds of impersonation as good and moral. Whereas, the church was instrumental in stopping the rise or the progress of theater, they were later to be the ones that contributed to the reemergence of theater again through enacting bible plays. Specifically, the Catholic Church was at the forefront in performing spectacles that were meant to make crowds happy. The reemergence of theatre started off through performance of rituals and ceremonies. However, this was not drama and the church took it to another level when bible passages were acted in ceremonies (p 26). Personally, I have witnesses some bible stories that have been acted into great movies. This is yet another pointer to the fact that the church has been greatly immersed into theatre.
