Light is an important aspect of the natural environment. The two purposes of light within the CPTED model are for security and to illuminate human activity. The presence of light means that we can visually see what is happening. An illuminated space also means a brighter and cleaner experience during the night. People are often attracted to lighter locations, and it also leads to a sense of security.
Light is important since it is an important component of fulfilling humans need for security and safety. The environment can directly impact a person. The environment will feel more secure if it is well lit, and the person can get a sense of well-being (University of Minnesota, 2016). The CPTED model includes both the building and its environment, which offers natural access to control and natural surveillance. An example is a building where the residents or tenants have a birds-eye view of the environment with ample light. The presence of light makes the person aware that they own the space, and they can easily watch over what is going on in the surrounding.
