Exploring Frames of Reference and Art's Influence on Music

Essay Instructions:

There are 3 parts of this assignment:
1. Exploring Frames of Reference
In lesson 11, we witness another example of a three-part sequence, from painting to sculpture:
You will notice that, depending on how we situate any one work of art, it can occupy various positions within a sequence. For example, in this week's lesson, van Gogh's Ravine could be part of a first-phase development in which Robert Rauschenberg’s Bed was a second phase and Tony Smith’s Die or Rauschenberg’s Monogram was part of a third phase.
In contrast, during lesson 10, Ravine was the third phase, while Rembrandt's Woman Wearing a Gold Chain was in the second phase and van der Weyden’s Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin was the first phase.
This is one of the first times we've looked at painting in our tripartite structure. Reflect on what similarities and differences you can find between the way we've looked at the evolution of sculpture and the way we can look at a similar evolution painting. What elements do you notice?
For example, in the Rembrandt, what is similar to both the Doryphoros and the sculptures at Reims Cathedral and Michelangelo's David? We are learning to speak about painting in a way that accords with sculpture.
2. Art's Influence on Music
In this lesson, we looked at the way that the development of painting has been intertwined with the developments of architecture and sculpture.
What other art forms have been essential elements in the development of music? How have different visual arts, or other artistic media affected the evolution of music? Give some examples and share your reasoning.
Post your thoughts, following the instructions below. Your post should be two to three paragraphs long. You may also upload descriptive text, a YouTube link, or an MP3 file
3. In this week's lesson, and in previous weeks, we have discussed works of art and the contexts in which they exist/are shown. How does seeing an object in its original context, and in a new (and perhaps unintended) context, change the way a work of art communicates? What, for example, is the difference between seeing a medieval altarpiece in the context of the church ( and perhaps a particular chapel) for which it was made versus seeing the same altarpiece at the Museum of Fine Arts behind glass? Or, seeing a Minimalist cube in a gallery for which it was made versus outdoors in an open-air courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art?
Along with the differences, are there any similarities in the two experiences ("original" versus new settings)? Please note that the point here is not to choose a "favorite" setting (original or new), but simply to reflect on the similarities and differences in the experience of the work of art when its setting has changed.
Finally, can you cite at least one example of a work of art discussed in this course in which the original setting has been changed? Discuss.
Post your thoughts, following the instructions below. Your post should be two to three paragraphs long.

There are several similarities and differences when examining the evolution of sculpture and painting. For instance, the evolution of both sculptures and paintings shows a marked development in the degree of visual order in terms of complexity. According to these metrics, these transitions are clear enough to facilitate a hierarchical organization and clustering of sculpture and painting. For instance, there are clear transitions in the evolution of sculptures and paintings from two-dimensional to three-dimensional. Both art mediums capture human likeness and natural objects in their most accurate form.
However, the evolution of the two art mediums was also different in that paintings could only strive to imitate the three-dimensional qualities of sculpture. In contrast, sculptures strove to achieve naturalism in terms of both depth and volume. The Doryphoros, the sculptures at Reims Cathedral, and Michelangelo's David are all similar since they all form a linear pattern in sculpture evolution. There is an artistic progression in terms of dynamism, naturalism, and sophistication from the Classical Doryphoros to the High Gothic sculptures at Reims Cathedral and eventually to the renaissance sculpture of Michelangelo (Lesson Notes, n.d.).
Art forms have been essential elements in the development of music in the same way that music has affected the creative process of many artists, such as the influence of jazz music on abstract expressionists and Cubist painters. Several ar...
