Digital art is modern art that is created and presented using digital technology. Digital art is sometimes referred to as the new media art, and one of the many examples of the art is the locative media art. Locative media art is created using location technologies such as the Global Positioning System GPS, cellular technologies, blue tooth, and Wireless Fidelity (WIFI). The kind of artwork ultimately uses the devices that tend to locate themselves, and these keep on occasionally emerging due to the advancement in technology. Locative media art, in most cases, exhibits the significant experiences of the subject and body, which are referred to as the key features that define the performance connection between the sense of the place and the augmented place (Cornelio and Ardevol, 2011).
Furthermore, locative artwork involves a broad set of practices that Artists use to shape art from the locative-aware technologies and how the technology shapes the different artists' practices and thinking into meaningful art. Locative artwork has played a tremendous role in shaping or developing location-aware devices and technologies from playing one role to various roles than just providing the location. There are several details to the locative artwork.
Locative media or artwork is the incorporation of location devices into artistic practices or performances. Locative artwork started in the early 2000s as an art movement to deploy location technologies into artistic work. Karlis Kalnins initially coined the artwork during the artist’s workshop from the 16th of July to the 26th of July 2003. The event was a Mapping Zone Event, and it was hosted in Karosta, Latvia, at the abandoned Soviet Era military base (McGarrigle, 2014). Initially, the term locative media or artwork was developed to create awareness and determine the difference between the artistic use of locative technologies from that of the military and commercial use. The artwork created awareness and set out a wide range of responsibilities that the location technologies could perform (McGarrigle, 2014). In other words, when artists developed the artwork, there was a change in the perception created towards the locative technologies as it had been earlier perceived that they were only limited to identifying the geographical location. Therefore, the locative artwork created new possibilities for the locative technologies to the entire population. The new possibilities made the locative medium perceived differently from a new medium used to locate places and create and perform art.
