Ancient Egyptian art is famous for its use of statues. Amongst the most famous statues from ancient times are the statues of Pharaoh Khafre enthroned and the Pharaoh Akhenaten. These artistic statues were often used to depict the Egyptian culture during different periods. Particularly the Pharaohs in ancient Egypt were depicted as having shoulders that were wide and broad, a strong body and a face that seemed ageless and devoid of emotions. The pharaoh in most cases was shown wearing the royal headdress while sitting in an immovable and rigid posture. False beards were also common in the statues of the Egyptian pharaohs. Based on this, the paper explores the style used in the statue of Pharaoh Khafre Enthroned and that of Akhenaten and how the two represent the cultural ideals and belief system of the time.
a.) The statue of Khafre Enthroned
The statue of Khafre Enthroned is a life-size representation of the Pharaoh who is shown siting on his throne. The throne is high back and pillared just as was common at the time. From the representation of Khafre, it is clear that he is royalty as per standards of the Egyptian art. For instance, he wears a headdress and his forehead has a cobra attached to it. These two symbolize royalty and the cobra is a source of protection for the pharaoh. Apart from these, the Khafre also has a false beard and a royal kilt. The representation of the facial features is perfectly done to indicate that he is a leader and this is evidenced through the wide mouth, wide nose and high cheekbones that all sit on a full face. The fact that he is a strong leader is depicted through Khafre’s strong wide chest and his strong arms that have well-outlined veins and muscles. His two hands rest on his thighs with the left one shown with an open palm. All these are indicators of the Pharaoh’s power, strength and mercy. The strength is also emphasized in the material used to sculptor the statue, which in this case is diorite. Inarguably, it is a very hard task carving diorite because of the hardness of the stone and therefore the fact that the material was used to make the statue prove the Khafre’s status. The idea of divinity is also represented in the statue through the Pharaoh’s gaze, which seems to focus on the horizon and beyond the level of human beings.
