Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman portrays the life of Willy Loman, a salesman who is 63 years old, and his family. Loman is married to Linda, and together they have two children; Happy and Biff. The play begins with a conversation between Linda and Loman. Although Loman has worked his entire life, he did not achieve his dreams as he expected. The older man is baffled by failing to meet his goals in life, which might be the reason why he got confused by having mixed thoughts. Miller develops several ideas in Death of a Salesman that shows the human need to reconcile the uncertainties of the past with a new or present situation.
In Death of a Salesman, the author depicts the significance of reconciling the uncertainties of the past with the present situation. In particular, the author uses Loman to show how things that have passed can haunt a person during his or her old age. The salesman used to travel many times, and his wife, Linda, is concerned about him since he had memory lapses. Linda wants her husband to request for a new job that does not require a lot of traveling (Miller, 1977). At this juncture, Loman had not made peace with his old age and appeared to be living in the past. He does not seem to bother about his deteriorating health condition, which might have adverse consequences on his job. Consequently, the uncertainty that Miller portrays here is the lack of acceptance of one’s age, which seems to ruin Loman’s thinking process.
Loman’s mind keeps shifting from the present to the past moments since there are things that appear to disturb him. His numerous business trips did not give him enough time to spend with his family, particularly nurturing his boys. Biff and Happy spend more time talking about women. ...
