Movies and Music help shape the society’s way of perceiving and telling stories and cultures. They help to ideate cultural concepts and break down any barriers. However, the use of music and movies continues to face cultural implications and ethical concerns. The essay explores examples of cultural appropriation vs. intercultural collaboration in movie music scores and television. It also discusses specific examples of how music is used stereotypically in television or film.
Cultural appropriation takes place when aspects of a specific culture are copied without prior comprehension of the culture or without paying respect to it (TEDx Deerfield, n.d.). These aspects are borrowed and applied by other people as stereotypes. The primary effect of cultural appropriation is that it may trigger a significant cultural misrepresentation. In the 1970 film ‘A Man Called Horse,’ an example of cultural appropriation can be seen in how American chants are applied to portray spiritualism. By doing so, the film presented bias on the individual cultures, banishing them as mere stereotypes.
On the other hand, intercultural collaboration targets coherent respect and a profound comprehension between different cultures. It enhances and captivates diversity, leading to a hybrid exchange that is beneficial and appropriate for all.
