Essay Instructions:

The question of “what is art” depends on your own experiences, prejudices, beliefs, and values. Consider the definition of beauty and how it is culturally determined.
Go to http://www(dot)winifred(dot)cichon(dot)com/ideal_beauty/ to read and view G. W. Cichon-Hollander’s “A Short Introduction to the Ideal Beauty of the Human Body in Art,” which illustrates ideas of female beauty using masterpieces of art, from Venus of Willendorf to examples in the early 20th century.
In your original post, please discuss:
1. In your opinion, how is beauty defined? What factors, cultural or otherwise, do you think influence your perception of beauty?
2. In terms of art, is beauty an important quality? When might an artist create something that is NOT beautiful? Why?
3. Browse your textbook, visit MyArtsLab, http://www(dot)googleartproject(dot)com/, or a museum website. Find an artwork that you think is beautiful. Post or link to the image. Be sure to state the artist, title, and source.
