A bond rating is a letter grade provided by various rating agencies or services to represent the credit quality. In addition, a bond issuer's financial capability to pay the interest and principal on a bond on time, is factored into the rating. Some of the most well-known bond rating organizations include DBRS, Moody's, Fitch Ratings, and Standard and Poor's ("Bond Ratings - Overview, Examples, List of Bond Rating Systems", 2021). These organizations exist to give quantitative and qualitative descriptions of the fixed-income securities that are available to investors. The common ratings are AAA, BBB, CCC, and D. This paper explores the differences between these bond ratings.
