Reflection on Social Movement
Many movements have emerged in recent years, especially during the pandemic, challenging the present-day situation and government policies. One such movement I will focus on is the series of protests in China in response to President Xi Jinping's zero- Covid policy. These occasions left an enduring impression on me, shaping my perspectives on social movements and their societal role.
The zero Covid coverage, applied by the Chinese government in reaction to the worldwide pandemic, aims to prevent the spread of the virus at all costs (Shangguan & Wang, 2022). This plan includes strict lockdowns, limited testing, and different measures. Although these measures were initially successful in controlling the virus, they also had significant consequences for the daily lives of Chinese citizens. In this context, civil society emerged, posing an unprecedented challenge to the government's approach.
A protest was held against the COVID-free policy from its widespread appearance and exhibits in various regions of China. This isolated approach was made possible by our integration of the digital age, and social media platforms play an essential role in gathering citizens and sharing information. As someone who has grown up in the digital age, I couldn't assist; however, I experienced the impact of those protests via the constant flow of news and videos on my social media. It is a cruel reminder of the strength of information and the way it may improve human family members.
The protests are enormous because they violate the authorities' statements and guidelines. Chinese citizens, who used to have access to information without access, are now actively questioning and criticizing the COVID-free plan. This new sense of enterprise and cooperation is something I have never seen before on such a scale in China. It made me understand the revolutionary nature of social movements in empowering individuals and communities to express their concerns and promote change.
