Note:  “You should be addressing and engaging with your classmates directly vice just critiquing what they wrote as the rest of the class did”. This is what my professor said, so please keep in mind when responding.

Question A - Leadership Derailed

In the uniformed world of the military most leaders are ethical, selfless and put mission and people first. But there have been many cases, recent and historical, where leaders who were viewed for decades as paragons of ethical behavior and character have run amok and fallen from grace. These leaders who have ethically derailed understand and outwardly embrace the acceptable character principals of our profession but many do not live them; their words and their deeds are not aligned. What factors cause some leaders who are faced with an ethical or moral decision that presents a dilemma between what they know is right, versus what they know is wrong, to choose the unethical course of action? How can these derailments be prevented?

Answers and follow-up discussions should include, but need not be limited to, thoughts found in the assigned “Strand” paper.

 

Question C - Leader Burnout

In the article "Why Do Anything about Burnout?" the author discusses at length the causes and negative effects of burnout on your organization and those you lead. An issue as important as what to do about burnout in your organization is: “what are the causes and the negative effects of burnout on you, the leader?” A leader’s raison d'etre is to bring success to the organization and those being led. The constant pressure of success in an environment that is characterized by unending problems causes leader stress. What can leaders do to prevent burnout in themselves? Have you experienced or witnessed leader burnout? If so, what were the causes?

Hello Cody, your analysis regarding leadership burnout is outstanding. As you have highlighted, leaders are likely to suffer from burnout, similar to the other individuals in the organization. In most instances, they have a higher rate of suffering from burnout since they use most of their time giving back to other people and the society which they are leading (Kamena, n.d). However, burnout usually negatively impacts individuals since most are reluctant to address it (Maslach, n.d, 50). Furthermore, you have highlighted that since burnout is likely to happen and negatively affect leaders, leaders should look for measures to manage it. One way of how the leader can successfully manage it is by managing the activities the individual is about to conduct. One example is Marine Gen.
