In Matthew 6:19-24, Jesus’ point was to inform Christians not to dwell on earthly possessions but focus on the kingdom of heaven. Scriptures state that the earth is full of rust and moth, meaning earthly possessions are temporary (NKJV, Matt. 6:19). Jesus stresses that the kingdom of heaven is infinite. Through verses 22 to 24, Jesus continues to say how a person’s eye reflects their moral quality and character. Keener (2011) stresses this stand by arguing that a bad eye, or figuratively a heart that is corrupt by earthly desires, will cause one to lose eternal life in heaven.
