The purpose, design, and findings of the study Summary
A study’s purpose statement is fundamental because it clarifies the central focus of the research and highlights the problem of investigation (Creswell & Poth, 2018). In this context, the purpose of conducting the study in article one arises from a scarcity of thorough assessments of men’s HPV vaccine acceptance and perceptions. As a result, Siu et al. (2019) sought to investigate these two components among Chinese men living in Hong Kong. Their primary objective was to illustrate how the diverse community’s cultural and social values influence the HPV vaccine acceptability among the males in this society. Thus, this clarification informs a reader that the researchers will focus on the Chinese male population within a specific locality.
Siu et al.’s (2019) article uses a qualitative research design that incorporates semi-structured interviews for all the participants. The authors also opted for purposive sampling because it would assist the researchers in finding individuals that meet the inclusion criteria. They only included men within 18 to 65 years, born in Hong Kong, who resided in the area, and without a record of HPV vaccination. The approach adopted by Siu et al. (2019) agrees with Creswell and Poth’s (2018) explanations of different strategies for conducting qualitative research. Notably, the choice of purposive sampling demonstrates the importance of acquiring the appropriate target groups for data collection.
Results of the study indicate that the Chinese men had inadequate knowledge and minimal awareness about HPV as a concerning health issue. They also reported having a significantly low perception of their vulnerability to related infections because they believed that such outcomes arise from people engaging in promiscuity. Additional findings also indicate that they felt vaccinations would be ideal for individuals engaging in risky sexual practices. However, the unavailability of appropriate information also complicated their willingness to embrace the vaccination. The research further indicates that these aspects become worsened by the complicated sexual and cultural values, patriarchal perspectives, and vaccine promotion tactics that primarily target women. As a result, men considered vaccination as a women-inclined issue.
The Appropriateness of the Choice of Study Design
Using a qualitative research design in this study by Siu et al. (2019) emerges as an appropriate decision.
