PUNJABI CULTURE
Introduction
Everyone is a subset of his or her roots. The sociocultural background of everyone is what affects their ways of life and their sets of beliefs in one way or the other. There is a significant link between how an individual relates with the environment around them, to how they have been affected by the same environment. One’s culture can practically dictate their friends, religion, career, and quite literally, how they live out the rest of their lives. Interestingly enough, everyone has got his or her own cultural bearing. Of interest in this paper is the Punjabi, one of the cultural subsets in India. It is located in the Punjab region of Pakistan, just as its name suggests. The Punjabi culture is rich in various practices, as the paper discusses.
(a).Origin
Before delving into the discussion of the Punjabi culture, it is worthwhile to understand the meaning of culture. Culture is indeed quite a complex construct, which plays an extremely crucial role in the conscious or subconscious being of an individual. According to Hofstede, it is “A collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the member of one human group from another” (Kane,n.d.).This simply means that it is something that greatly impacts the mind to believe and keep on practicing some things on a routine basis. It therefore encompasses all the sets of practices, beliefs, attitudes and even customs, which define a specific localized social group and its life. As Mole summarizes it, culture is “How we do things around here” (Kane,n.d.). Superimposing such an understanding into the Punjabi cultural definition, it is how things are done in the Punjab region.
The Punjabi culture is one of the oldest but as well as the richest cultures in the world. Its origins trace back to centuries ago, and has managed to survive and still be quite rich in practices in the present day. The culture traces back to centuries ago, and is mainly categorized as an Indo-Aryan race. For over five centuries, the Punjabis have occupied the area of Southwest India (Eglar, 1960). The name Punjab roughly translates to the land of five rivers in the native language. This is the literal meaning of their location to date, where the territory occupied by the culture is spanned by five rivers.
The culture, as initially mentioned, found its footing around these rivers, with the largest of them being the Indus River. In the middle ages, the culture was quite diverse, with much of its social setup being around the traditional caste system that was so common in India. It is quite interesting to note that ever since the Middle and Medieval Ages to the present, the cultural practices are still much acknowledged and held in high regard (Shackle, 1970). There has been very little lost or changed through that tie, and it is perhaps the reason as to why the Punjabi culture has continued to grow over the years to even outside the Indian subcontinent.
The Punjab culture is one of the most populous on the planet, with a population of over 80 million. It was once a broad culture that spanned much of the western Indian Territory or Indian subcontinent. With the splitting of India and...
