The Annals is a work by Roman senator and historian Tacitus. These are a significant source of understanding the history of the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD; the most interesting aspect of the Annals is that Tacitus has maintained his thesis of the necessity of the principate. He can be found saying that Augustus has given and warranted peace to the state years after the civil war. On the other hand, the most surprising part of the Annals is where Tacitus sheds light on the dark side of life under the Caesars.
