Critical Analysis of Media for Black Joy
The series that I have picked highlights the black culture and the joy that they provided in the media back when television was still the primary source of entertainment. The series Prince of bel air is started by Will Smith, an actor that is very well known worldwide; in the series, he is a teenager that is always getting into trouble when he is in his hometown, which is why his mother sent him to her relatives. His relatives come from a higher social class, and because of how different their way of life is from what Will Smith has experienced in his hometown, he was able to blend in.
The Prince of Bel-Air was a very iconic TV series in the 19's, and with its air, the main character, which is Will Smith, also retained in the viewers' minds. In the series, the authentic culture of black people is shown clearly. One of the goals of the series is to remove the gap between the upper class and lower class because it is one cause of discrimination besides color. Most of the characters in the series are black, so when they interact with other black people, their way of living and culture is also shown, which is retained in the audience's mind.
Another reason that I have chosen this series is that the theme song of the series is very memorable and catchy to the ears. Whenever I hear this theme song, I remember the series in which Will Smith starred. When speaking or performing in front of the camera, black people are naturally funny and always have that distinct acting style that the audience adores.
The series has many themes, one of which is Will Smith's relationship with his Uncle. They always have a fight because Will Smith is not listening or acting like a kid as always, but in the end, they remain in a healthy relationship between godson and Uncle. Second is his relationship with his girlfriend, the same as the way they act with his Uncle. They always fight but still understand each other despite going through tough and challenging times together. Their relationship also shows the importance of understanding one's partner.
