The article by Joel Olson is an essential source of information. For one, the article helped to demystify the importance and the role of zealotry and fanaticism. The concept of zealotry has for a long time been considered to be of not that much worth. The article helped clarify the relationship between the idea of zealotry and democracy. The article acknowledges that the American abolitionists, such as Stephen Foster and Wendell Philips, were self-defined fanatics who had an enormous zeal to fight against slavery (Olson 685). The article demonstrates how Phillip used his speeches to mobilize the people and divide them into friends and enemies, forcing moderation in between.
