Theology without Borders
The speaker was invited to talk in a church in Suzuka, Japan. The audience was comprised of Spanish and Portuguese speakers. Naturally, the Japanese are highly traditional people who value their cultural beliefs and ways of life, and I would have expected a Japanese-speaking audience. Also, I would have expected to hear that the talk was to be given in a temple. The story completely contradicts my expectations, making it a fascinating point for me. The same church in which the talk was held was also started by a Peruvian couple, who developed their interest in starting their ministry while attending a Brazillian Pentecostal church service.
From the first chapter, the author introduces himself, his background, and a brief background of his family. It is interesting to learn how twisted his roots are and his mixed-race level. Despite being mixed race, both his parents lived well in an era when racism was at its highest. It is surprising that a part of their mix comprised Blacks and Indians (a very rare occurrence of that time).
In chapter 2, the author is born of a highly educated father, who is also a professor at a local college, while the mother never attended college. It is great to learn that the latter was born of the former. The point is interesting because it entails a highly learned professor marrying a woman without a college education. It is also interesting to learn how his family believed in ancient Christian practices that later revolved from a Lutheranian system to more of an Evangelical system. It is also one of the indications of the dynamics of Christianity as it defines the changes exactly how they occurred.
