Science fiction writers are always searching for good ideas for plots that will capture the interest of their readers.

A common premise during one particular era of science fiction movies was that radiation somehow altered biological processes, transforming normal human beings into super humans – some good and some evil. One such example is the Incredible Hulk who, through a laboratory accident, developed superhuman strength that manifested itself when he was angry. Your task is to create your own superhero by pretending it is possible to magnify one of the perceptions or components of a perception we talked about in class. After you’ve considered the components and functions for the sense you choose to alter, give your imagination free rein as you explore the kinds of alterations that might fit the demands of a superhero’s life. What challenges would allow your superhero to demonstrate their exceptional abilities? Think creatively! You must come up with an all new superhero and not one that already exists.

The following components should be part of your paper:

• A superhero name – be creative

• Describe the super ability (which perception or component of perception is altered).

• Indicate how this could be possible biologically* (cite relevant facts about how the sense operates normally and what changes would occur by incorporating information you have learned in class – thus, apply your knowledge to explain!)

• Describe your superhero’s vulnerability

• What would diminish his/her/their special powers? * All super abilities must be biologically possible/plausible.

Once you have created your superhero:

• create an archenemy for your superhero (all good superheroes need an enemy)

• Give your archenemy a name (be creative)

• Describe how your archenemy defeats your superhero’s super ability

The superhero's name is Darubini, a Swahili term for binoculars. Darubini is a fitting name for a female protagonist, with the plot revolving around the sense of sight and its relationship with electricity. The character will undergo biological metamorphosis once she encounters a huge source of electricity in the form of lightning. Darubini's backstory places her origins on the coast of Mombasa; however, she is unable to fully enjoy the coastline as she was born with congenital blindness. On a fateful day, she remembers the air to be humid, her skin sticky, and her breathing feeling heavy. Little did she know the day's atmosphere presented the perfect recipe for a bolt of white lightning, considered the most dangerous.
Darubini's encounter with the lighting is a near-death experience, and it requires the services of the village's healer to nurse her to health. However, after months of recovery, she has a restored sense of sight. The plot develops with Darubini discovering that she can do more than see by gaining the ability to magnify her vision. Surviving a lightning strike of that magnitude altered her brain functioning, creating endless possibilities for her visual abilities.
