The demand for unions today has decreased tremendously owing to a couple of reasons. There is a significant shift from the industrial age to the information era meaning that there are more service industries today than manufacturing ones. Also, increased competition from international rivals amidst the ever-growing force of globalization has impacted the need for unions. The work served by the unions was replaced by the workplace protection laws decreasing the need for these institutions. Besides, the United States (U.S.) legal environment made it challenging for unions to expand their membership let alone organize workers (Greenlaw and Shapiro 326).
