The Essence of Truth, the The Reliability of Memory, and The Importance of An Apology After Lying

Coursework Instructions:

follow the instructions in the attached document
I have already chosen the topic and will include the two works that it will be about.

Note: Strive for interesting, original insights and proper essay organization. This paper will not include any outside research. Do not Google or include any sources other than the works you are writing about. The subject of your analysis will be any two of the assigned short stories or poems that we read in class (listed on the course schedule overview). You may not write about a story or poem we are not reading in class.

                                                            Paper Proposal

1. Copy and paste your chosen topic here. If you choose to focus on different questions than the examples provided in your topic, make sure to include those, too.

Topic 4: Analyze how memory works in two of the stories or poems assigned for class. What comment does the author make about memory’s reliability, if any? Does it matter if events are remembered and communicated perfectly? Is absolute truth essential to storytelling or is it acceptable to “fill in the gaps”? Is it acceptable to exaggerate? To intentionally omit or change details of a story to communicate an idea?

2. Now attempt to answer your question as directly as possible in a complete sentence. Write this sentence on the next page, above the boxes. This is your working thesis.

3. Now consider how you will structure your argument. Think of your paper structure in terms of sections, not paragraphs.  This should not be a five-paragraph essay.  Write headings in the boxes on the next page to identify the sections of your essay.  (You might not need all of the boxes.) Hint: Each section should focus on one main element of your argument.

4. Now go back to the stories or poems you’ve chosen and find passages that support your argument. List those passages or quotations briefly in the appropriate boxes on the next page, including citations (You don’t need to list the whole quotation/passage, but give enough information that I can go to the page number and find it). This chart can help you to develop an outline of your paper. Be sure to include strong topic sentences for each paragraph and textual support (direct quotations from the stories) as well.
