Standard Loneliness Package Summary Essay

Coursework Instructions:

English 1302: Paper # 4
Language and Literary Style
Understanding and interpreting a story fully is impossible without closely analyzing the aspects of its language and the “literary style” of its author. You must compare the two stories on the basis of language and tone (diction, imagery, literal and figurative language, allusion, repetition, symbolism, irony, dialogue, syntax).
First Story: “Fable” by Charles Yu (here is the .pdf)
Second Story: “Standard Loneliness Package” by Charles Yu

Suggested Structure:
Introduction: Summary of both stories and a thesis statement (does not have to be a central idea; it can just be a statement of what you will be comparing: “This essay will examine Whitehead’s use of metaphor, symbolism and dialogue to create a playful tone in his coming-of-age stories.”) *Try to keep the summary on a single page (you will need to have very brief summaries for this!)
Body Paragraph 1: Choose an element of language and compare in Story 1 & Story 2
Body Paragraph 2: Choose an element of language and compare in Story 1 & Story 2
Body Paragraph 3: Choose an element of language and compare in Story 1 & Story 2
Conclusion: An overall commentary on the author’s literary style, themes and how these are exemplified in the stories you chose.
