Marie – lead character. She is strong but unsure and afraid of what the future holds for her. Nina – young, curious, and full of dreams which appear to stretch what is possible or allowed. Garret – a kind and loving man who supports and appear to Understand Marie quite well.
Marie is the protagonist.
Anders is the antagonist and a representation of the repressive and oppressive regime.

At the start, the setting is Marie’s thoughts which then shifts to the present. However, the present is an idea of the future and how things might be with people living in quotas and there being rules to govern and dictate the people’s every move.
