Evaluate the role of the United Nations in advancing international co-operation since 1945. You may use a table to highlight some of its successes/failures if you wish. Some concise writing must be included regarding to what extent you believe the United Nations has been effective in promoting international peace and supporting human rights? You should discuss the following:
*Cambodia (under Pol Pot), 1991 Gulf War, Somalia, and Rwanda. You may also want to comment on the current situation in Iraq.

UN success and failures in promoting international peace and supporting human rights
The crimes of the Khmer Rouge can be classified as genocide as over one million people died through systematic killing and targeting people in Cambodia. Hundreds of thousands of people were executed, others were victims of starvation, illness, forced labor, kidnappings and illnesses. Under Pol Pot a Cambodian communist revolutionary and general many died and the United Nations failed to apply pressure on the regime in the period 1975-1979 and focused on punishing those responsible for genocide and crimes against humanity in the 1990s. There was special tribunal for Khmer Rouge war crimes setup in the year 2000, but some of the worst perpetrators of genocide and human rights violations remain unpunished
The Security Council Resolution 660 (1990), which was reaffirmed as Resolution 661 (1990) followed to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, which was a breach of international peace and security. However, the United States had already sent troops even before the Council Security and imposed an embargo on Iraq. The UN authorized the use of force, and the aim was to repel Iraq, which had invaded Kuwait and there was a need to maintain collective peace and security. The UN Security Council is responsible for sanctioning states that breach peace or commit an act of aggression. While such sanctions do not necessarily involve armed force, military coercion can be used to achieve this purpose. The effectiveness of Security Council’s intervention after the Iraq invasion and international cooperation showed that success was possible when there is coordination of actions.
Following the ouster of Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia has not had a fully functioning government in over two decades. Furthermore, the emergence of Alshabaab terrorists and clanism has made it difficult to govern the country. The UN first tried playing a mediating role among the warring factions including sending observer missions to monitor the situation, and in 1992 imposed an arms embargo.
