The summons for the gathering at St. John's Church on March 23, 1775, was made in response to the deteriorating ties between Great Britain and its American colonies. Determining what Virginia's colony ought to do in response to escalating tensions and a possible war with the British government was the main goal of the gathering.
Henry addressed the President and the members of the Second Virginia Convention as "Mr. President" and "Gentlemen" in the first sentences of his speech. Following that, he continues, "I hope it won't be insulting to those guys if, enjoying as I do views of a nature completely contrary to theirs, I shall bring forth my thoughts openly even without a reservation." These remarks indicate that Henry will soon offer a viewpoint different from most audiences.
