Titus Kaphar: Analogous Color
The painting, Analogous of colors, by Titus Kaphar, was used by Times magazine on its cover on 15 June 2020. The image shows a black woman holding a child. However, a white void exists in a child's place, meaning the child is gone. The woman is calm and composed from a glance but seems stressed by the look on her face. The woman's left side appears a blue color behind her head, and her left hand is holding the baby. Also, names such as Sandra Bland, Philando Castile, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner are written to border the magazine. Notably, these are individuals who died as a result of police brutality in America. Thus, the painting depicts a black woman who is disturbed and stressed over losing her black child to police brutality.
At the time of creation, a protest against the murder of George Floyd was going on, and Times magazine was covering the protest. Notably, the central part of the image covers a woman and a child. The woman represents the pain and agony black mothers go through after their innocent children are killed by police brutality. The child means hope for justice, and the mothers are tired of waiting and holding on to empty hope. The work is constructed to represent a mother's agony and the unending police brutality. Also, Titus uses the painting to relate the killing of George Floyd and calling out to his mother during his arrest. Floyd lost his life when police suffocated him for 8 minutes 42 seconds using their knee cap.
