Social Class Inequality and Social Stratification
Social class inequalities and stratifications, particularly arising due to economic disparities, are increasing globally. The impacts of this trend have resulted in pernicious effects associated with the rising inequalities in terms of health and wellbeing in different continents, nations, and cultures (Kraus, Park and Tan, 2017, p. 422). Over the recent past, studies have shown that individuals belonging to advantaged social classes have immunity over unemployment. However, such protection tends to differ based on gender and levels of education, among other factors (Lahtinen, Sirnio and Martikainen, 2018, p. 303). In terms of health inequality, broad global trends show that economic inequalities have escalated to become a pressing social issue affecting not only the health of individuals but also their wellbeing. This paper defines social class inequality and social stratification using an example of children from disadvantaged backgrounds who are less likely to participate in sports due to limited access.
Social inequalities are relational processes in modern societies that may harm or limit the social class, circle, and status of a particular group or community, such as the minorities. This concept is related to the social stratification of ranking individuals based on socioeconomic tiers such as education levels, economic status, race, and power (Cornell University, 2021). In terms of such rankings, groups will have differential access to resources and result in the common systems of stratifications based on gender, race, and social classes evidenced in today’s America. For instance, participation in sports is largely limited among disadvantaged groups as a result of limited access. Research indicates that sports participation is closely linked to developmental outcomes among youth, although differential access to sports disadvantaged youth from low-income households (Super et al., 2018.).
