Five Major Perspectives on Early Childhood
Over the years, the world has experienced different transformations regarding early childhood education. Most of these transformations have played a critical part in the foundation of current education. Even though there are many perspectives, the following are the five major perspectives experienced between ancient Greece and the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s.
Plato (428-328 B.C.)
At this time, Plato advocated that stories, games, music, and drama, representing good citizens should be incorporated into education. Moreover, Plato spearheaded the idea that gifted children be identified and awarded enrichment programs. Furthermore, he also insisted that girls be offered education similar to boys. Plato also emphasized that the knowledge of geometry and geometrical shapes was critical in children’s education. Plato also advocated for village children aged 3-6 to play together since he highlighted that playing was essential and free play was also critical.
The Middle Ages (500-1450)
This perspective consisted of the "Oblates," young children who choose to live a religious life. The following approach advocated for boys and girls to be educated separately even though the teachers would award them the same educational opportunity. There were instances where the boys were sent away to perform as child servants during their education. On the other hand, when the boys conducted these functions, the girls were supposed to remain at home, where they were taught to weave, play instruments, and sing. Both boys and girls were being taught manners.
Martin Luther (1483-1546)
