Technology has already been used in numerous fields. It has proven highly beneficial in business, health, communication, and education. Technology has made life easier for teachers and students and increased student engagement. Teachers must be aware of how to maximize the use of technology in the classroom in this digital age. Teachers must be mindful of technology resources that can assist them in capturing students’ attention and interest, allowing them to participate and learn more effectively using technology (Potasheva et al., 2019). This paper discusses five technological resources for social studies teachers, specifically history and geography. Social studies may appear to be a tedious subject for students because it requires memorizing a large amount of information, such as names, dates, and historical events; however, with the proper use of technology, it does not have to be (Gamar & Tati, 2021). As a result, teachers should be aware of the five technological resources that can assist them.
State Standards
Here are Washington’s social studies state standards in Geography and History.
Geography
The student uses a spatial perspective to make reasoned decisions by applying the concept of location, region, and movement, and demonstrating knowledge of how geographic features and human cultures impact environment (Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, 2019).
History
The student understands and applies knowledge of historical thinking, chronology, eras, turning points, major ideas, individuals, and themes of local, Washington state, tribal, United States, and world history in order to evaluate how history shapes the present and future (Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, 2019).
Technological Resources
Google Earth
Google Earth is a website owned by Google. Here is the link to access the website: https://earth.google.com/web/. This tool makes geography study more tangible because of its functions. It has been fascinating and helpful because it allows students to view a specific location and its cities and landscapes from various perspectives. The teacher can use this tool to assign a task that asks students to locate a location in Washington and explain what they see there. Students will actively participate because they will all be assigned to look for the exact location. Furthermore, students can use the tool to locate a location if they are unfamiliar with it. As a result, Google Earth is a tool that could be useful in teaching Social Studies.
